End the Next-Gen Console War

Can we end the phrase “next-gen console war”?  Honestly…there isn’t any war between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.  And even if there was, you, the buyer of either console, aren’t a part of it.  No console will “fail”.  Neither system needs you to help sell it or cheerlead for it.  Microsoft and Sony don’t need your help.  They each have huge budgets and professionals to help get the word out and sell their products.

The Failure of SimCity and the Cities of Tomorrow

SimCity (Technically, SimCity 5 or SimCity 2013, just so we are clear about which version I’m talking about since EA/Maxis dropped the numbering) was a huge disappointment for me.  EA/Maxis were close to hitting the mark, but couldn’t get the game exactly to what longtime fans of the series expected.  Let me tell you where the game failed in my eyes.

PlayStation Move Thoughts

Have any of you seen PlayStation Move in action?  Last night on PlayStation Home they had some kind of event blah blah blah, anyway there was a video in the theatre from a recent showing of PlayStation Move and to be honest I was quite unimpressed.  Maybe it's because I've had a Nintendo Wii since 2006 but, everything that was shown, with the exception of SOCOM 4, appeared to be very gimmicky and an attempt to catch up to Nintendo.  Just about everything they showed felt like it was already done by Nintendo and probably done better, graphics aside of course.

I honestly can't remember any of the game titles that I saw last night.  I remember some sports games (table tennis), which by the way looked incredibly laggy, some drawing game where you had to draw really fast with the Move controller, a mini-game that the objective was to cut hair, and finally Downhill Office Chair Racing.  Yes that's exactly what it is, a downhill racing game on a friggin' chair!!!!  Give me a break!  Crap crap crap that's all I saw last night.

Granted even though I am not in awe from what I saw, I still am psyched to see and try out PlayStation Move.  What do you guys think?  Are you impressed so far?  Vote on our new poll down on the bottom.

E3 2010: Jason's Day 3 Thoughts

So Day three has come and gone, technically Day 2 of the show floor being open, and nothing really too groundbreaking today.  New information on LEGO: Harry Potter Years 1 -4, LEGO: Star Wars 3: Clone Wars, and EyePet Move was announced.

I would like to have seen a lot more demos of Move and Kinect.  Niether tech has really sold me yet and I feel this is the time to do it.  Still no words of pricing from Microsoft for Kinect....This has me worried.  Is it going to cost more than Move?

Mortal Kombat... How could I have forgotten.  Have I mentioned that it looks ridiculously awesome and it's about time the franchise got a refresh like this?

Overall Meh, Hopefully tomorrow will bring more information on the Nintendo 3DS.  To me the biggest announcements this year have been the hardware: PlayStation Move, Xbox Kinect, and Nintendo 3DS.  That is so far. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

E3 2010: Jason's Day 2 Thoughts

It's very hard to not be overwhelmed by the amount of new products being announced at E3.  I'll admit it, I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed with all these amazing announcements today.  Where to start...

The Nintendo 3DS...  Simply an amazing device.  When you think there is nothing else that can be done to the handheld market, Nintendo comes along and changes everything.  Basically to some it up "if you aren't buying the 3DS on day 1...why are you still alive?"  Looking forward to Paper Mario, Professor Layton..  Unfortunately no pricing details have been released yet ...

Metroid: Other M looks simply fantastic.  To think that the Nintendo Wii can pump out pixels like those shown on the trailers.. amazing.  Gameplay looks really fun too, I can't wait to get my hands on this.

E3 2010: Jason's Day 1 Thoughts

Lots of new info coming out of E3.  It's very easy to be overwhelmed by the amount of new information.  Lot's of great things were announced today like the new Xbox 360, Microsoft's Kinect, Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon, etc.

What am I most excited about so far...Hmm... I think I am most interested about Kinect.  I think I'd like to see more of Kinect and what we are going to see in terms of software.  I actually love the fact that you can control the Xbox 360 with voice and swiping.  Gone are the days when I'll be sitting on the couch about to put on a movie on Netflix and say.. "Shit where is the Xbox remote!"  As much as I love wireless, I do sometimes miss the wired controllers that way you can track them down easier.  If you don't have kids you don't understand...If you do then you will know that these controllers disappear easily.  I hope to see better software for Kinect.

Ubisoft showed off the Your Shape: Fitness Evolved which I think has a lot of potential and I think will be more usable then say the Wii Fit board.  If Kinect is as accurate as they say it is, then titles like this will enable players to exercise in their home without a trainer and be able to be healthier.

Kinect final thoughts... I don't know yet, seems promising.

The new Xbox 360 looks great!  I love the design and the features.  The 250GB HDD is something that should have been done a long time ago.  Honestly with the price of HDDs these days 250GB should be the minimum and bigger options should be available.

Other Ubisoft announcements like Ghost Recon: Future Solider, Michael Jackson, and Rayman ORIGINS look outstanding and looking forward to the releases of all of these titles.  And can we say Wtf was Innergy?  Didn't Nintendo already announce this last year?  We don't need another Vitality sensor!

Nothing so far has really gotten me super excited yet.  Let's see what Nintendo has to say with the 3DS and what other titles Kinect will bring out.

Nintendo 3DS Price and Release Date Announced? BLAH!

As you have already seen, Nintendo has finally announced the cost and release date of the Nintendo 3DS. But 25,000 YEN equates to about $300 US so figure it will cost roughly $230 here given the exchange rate, etc. That's a lot of dough for a handheld system. For the same price or pretty close you can get a home console that does much much more.

I am not one to generally knock Nintendo but that price seems high. I would have been more accepting of $150-$200, but breaking that $200 mark... ouch. Will I get one? Probably. I am sure that once I get my hands on one I will fall in love with the technology and want to buy it. It seems promising but I guess I have sticker shock right now and what sucks most of all is that we have to wait till March 2011 for a US launch.  UGH!

Windows 7 Phone - My thoughts

While walking through Manhattan today on my way to the Nintendo World Store and coming from Clown School (Wife and I will be in Macy's Day Parade), I accidentally (read: purposely) dragged my wife into an AT&T store since I wanted to see a Windows 7 phone. I saw, I believe, the HTC Surround and the Samsung Focus. Please keep in mind that this is not a review of either the phone or of Windows 7 just my thoughts of what I briefly saw today.

PlayStation Move calibration fails; found a fix

I was trying to play the Sports Champions today with my PlayStation Move on PS3 today and I was having a problem with the game calibrating the PlayStation Move controller.  The part right after you start the game and it wants you to point the PlayStation Move controller at the screen and press the two buttons.  It would fail every time.  I followed the on screen instructions to try and fix it, but nothing worked.  I also tried unplugging my camera and plugging it back it.  Nothing.  I tried playing the Time Crisis demo on the demo disc, but the cursor never pointed on the screen properly.

However, I did find something that worked to fix the problem.  In the PlayStation 3 menu, you can actually recalibrate the PlayStation Move controller.  See the video below on how to recalibrate the controller if you are having this problem.

I'm not sure if this is a permantent fix for the problem, but I haven't had any problems so far after doing it.

DSiWare is terrible; my solution

I just got a Nintendo DSi over the weekend to replace the Nintendo DS lite that my dog ate last year.  If you already have one, you know you can download games from the Nintendo DSi Shop.  Games range from 200-800 Nintendo Points.  Points cost $10 for 1000.  There is also a free web browser and some other application that I didn’t bother with, if you need something for free.  I don’t even use my regular consoles for browsing the web, no way in hell I am wasting time on the DSi trying to browse the web.
